We offer best care practices and general maintenance for trees to protect and maintain their health, safety, and longevity. Spurless climbing is an example of a tree care practice.
Spurless Tree Climbing:
While trimming trees, we avoid using spikes to climb because it can damage trees.
We offer full removal of trees.
Tree Risk Assessment:
We have our Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ). International Society of Arborists (ISA) defines this qualification as the following: “TRAQ is an ISA qualification program that trains arborists how to use the methodologies outlined in the ISA Best Management Practices or Tree Risk Assessment. This qualification promotes the safety of people and property by providing a standardized and systematic process for assessing tree risk. The results of a tree risk assessment can provide tree owners and risk managers with the information to make informed decisions to enhance tree benefits, health, and longevity.”
“Thinning”/”Wind Sail Pruning”:
We at Earthworks believe in continuing education and research. We learn from teachers, consultants, municipal tree care professionals, and local leaders in the tree care industry. We believe that “thinning” conifers in the Pacific Northwest is not an effective way to reduce branch failure. “Thinning” is removing every 5th branch or so and trimming away interior foliage from the central trunk. This results in a wider, longer crown to make up for the loss of the interior foliage/branches. When branches become longer and have more leverage, they are more likely to break. For example, if there is 50lbs of weight at the tip of a 30ft branch, it turns into 1500lbs at the trunk. Through "Crown Reduction Pruning," we encourage interior growth and reduce the outside growth.
Crown Reduction Pruning:
We offer Crown Reduction Pruning instead of “Thinning”. Please watch our educational video (coming soon).
The crown is from the first branch to the top of a tree and includes all branches and foliage. A crown reduction is a pruning method that reduces the height and width of a tree crown. We shorten the length of branches to reduce leverage and reduce the chance of failure (see “Thinning”/”Wind Sail Pruning”) . A Douglas Fir that has had a crown reduction will stand still on a windy day, versus a Douglas Fir that has been thinned or had no tree care, which will sway significantly.
Crown reduction is a more involved, harder process to perform and may increase costs slightly. It is effective and at the best interest of the tree, however, and worth it. (I don’t quite like my wording here).
